Cat Litter Comparison: Types, Brands and Products

Updated October 28, 2026

Cat litter comparison showing clay, tofu, cassava, corn, crystal, wood and mixed litter types.

Choosing cat litter gets easier when you separate three decisions: the material you want, the cleanup routine you can maintain, and the exact formula you are considering. A clay litter, a tofu pellet and a crystal litter can all belong on a shopping shortlist while asking different things of you.

Start with clumping versus non-clumping, then compare fragrance, package weight, disposal instructions and purchase cost. Use dust, tracking and odor claims as questions to investigate rather than scores that automatically identify a winner.

This guide compares 13 specific US-market products across seven material and formula groups. It is a research-based comparison, not a hands-on test of all 13. We selected representative products for their usefulness and available evidence; affiliate availability did not determine inclusion.

Cat litter types at a glance

Material names help you organize the choices, but they do not tell you everything inside a bag. “Tofu” products can contain several ingredients, wood litter can clump or remain in pellets, and a product called cassava litter may contain other starches.

How We Compared These Cat Litters

We used five kinds of information:

  • Manufacturer specifications and claims identify materials, formula names, fragrance and intended performance. Claims about dust, tracking, odor, flushability and sustainability remain the manufacturer’s claims.
  • Retailer information helps establish the selected US listing, pack size and purchase offer. Retail descriptions often repeat brand copy rather than independently verify it.
  • Independent evidence provides additional context where a reviewer identifies the product and describes using it. Older packs and different formulas limit what those observations tell us about today’s selected listing.
  • A dated price snapshot makes purchase prices comparable without presenting them as live offers.
  • Editorial interpretation explains why a documented difference might matter to a buyer.

We did not personally test all 13 products, and the research did not establish a standardized performance test across this exact set. That is why there are no stars, universal winners or rankings based on competing dust percentages and odor-day promises.

Compare the exact products and purchase prices

These are October 25, 2026 one-time purchase snapshots, excluding coupons, first-order offers, autoship discounts, tax and shipping. The linked listings identify the selected products; their current prices or availability may differ.

The price-per-pound figures come from that research snapshot and are shown to four decimals for consistency. They measure purchase cost by mass, not how long a bag lasts or its total value.

Clumping clay: compare fragrance, handling and release claims

These three products provide different reference points within clay. Two are unscented; one uses fragrance and emphasizes easier release. Their package sizes also matter if you carry litter upstairs or struggle with heavy containers.

Dr. Elsey’s Ultra Unscented — 40 lb

Ultra is a straightforward reference for buyers considering unscented clumping clay. Dr. Elsey’s describes it as natural clay with heavier, medium-grain particles, and markets hard clumping, low tracking and a 99% dust-free formulation.

Its declared ingredient category is natural clay; the exact bentonite proportion is unspecified.

At the research price, Ultra had a relatively low purchase cost per pound within this set. The practical counterweight is a 40-pound bag. Consider it if an unscented clay reference and a large pack fit your routine. Its instructions specify trash disposal rather than flushing.

Tidy Cats Free & Clean Unscented — standard-weight 35-lb pail

Free & Clean offers an ingredient distinction: natural clay with activated charcoal, without added fragrances or dyes. Purina’s formula page connects the charcoal to odor control and markets tight clumps, low tracking and a 10-day odor-control guarantee when used as directed.

The standard-weight 35-pound pail makes this an unscented clay option to examine if charcoal is an ingredient you want to compare. Check whether its weight suits how you store and move supplies; Lightweight Free & Clean is a separate formula.

Arm & Hammer SLIDE Easy Clean-Up Multi-Cat — scented 38 lb

SLIDE brings a different question into the clay comparison: how much do you value a formula marketed around release from the box?

The 38-pound Easy Clean-Up formula emphasizes non-stick or easier-cleanup behavior. It is scented, which creates a clear distinction from the two unscented options above.

If sticking is your main frustration, SLIDE’s release-focused positioning gives you a specific feature to investigate for your tray. Keep the exact Easy Clean-Up Multi-Cat formula and selected pack in view when comparing offers.

If you’re choosing among these clay options, Ultra offers an unscented 40-pound bag; Free & Clean adds charcoal in a 35-pound pail and had a lower snapshot cost per pound. SLIDE is scented, comes in the selected 38-pound pack and emphasizes release. Its snapshot cost per pound was higher than either unscented option.

Tofu: compare ingredients as well as pellets

“Tofu litter” is a useful category name, but it is not a complete ingredient list. These two products illustrate why looking beyond the front label matters.

Tuft & Paw Really Great — Unscented Charcoal, 9.25 lb

The selected Really Great formula lists soybean fiber, calcium carbonate, corn starch, pea fiber and activated carbon. It is the Unscented Charcoal version.

Tuft & Paw markets its pellet format as low tracking and 99% dust-free, and describes the product as flushable. The charcoal is part of its odor-control positioning.

For buyers seeking an identified unscented pellet formula, the 9.25-pound package also offers a smaller load to handle than the clay packs above.

The brand’s FAQ also warns that the pellets may not work reliably in many self-cleaning systems. Buyers using an automatic box should resolve that fit before treating the product as a candidate for their setup.

pidan Natural Tofu — 5.29 lb

pidan Natural Tofu offers another small-bag pellet comparison. The official ingredient description includes soy and pea pulp fiber, starches and flour, a silica/calcium carbonate blend, and trace components. “Tofu” should therefore not be read as pure soybean material.

The brand promotes fast clumping, low tracking and an anti-dust formula. Its published mixture of pellet diameters leaves pellet length and machine fit to be checked separately.

The exact scent designation on the selected US Natural Tofu listing remains unverified. If fragrance is a deciding factor, check the current label.

The practical differences between these tofu products are the ingredient list, bag size and scent information. Really Great pairs a verified Unscented Charcoal formula with 9.25 pounds; pidan Natural Tofu comes in a 5.29-pound bag with an unverified exact scent field. pidan had the lower snapshot purchase cost per pound.

Cassava-labelled litter: the recipe matters

pidan Cassava — 5.29 lb, one bag

The selected US listing for pidan Cassava identifies cassava starch, corn starch, wheat starch and baking soda. It belongs in a cassava comparison, but it is a multi-starch formula rather than pure cassava.

pidan’s product information emphasizes a fine texture and quick formation of dry, non-sticky clumps. That positioning makes the formula relevant to someone comparing a fine-textured plant-based option with tofu pellets.

The small bag creates a different initial outlay and handling decision from a large clay pack. Carry-out and actual consumption remain questions to assess in your setup.

This entry refers to the one-bag Cassava product. A similarly named formula containing tofu would be a different comparison.

Corn: an established branded alternative

World’s Best Multi-Cat Unscented — 28 lb

World’s Best Multi-Cat Unscented provides a corn-based clumping reference in a larger plant-litter pack.

The brand’s formula guide describes an added natural plant ingredient for enhanced odor control. Use “Multi-Cat” to identify this particular formula when comparing listings.

This product deserves consideration if you want to compare a corn-based clumper with clay or tofu while keeping an unscented formula on the shortlist. Its recorded price per pound sat between the clay examples and several smaller plant-based bags.

Before budgeting around the 28-pound pack, check the topping-up and full-replacement routine. Those consumption details are missing from this price comparison. Keep any performance claims tied to this exact formula.

Crystal litter: compare the cleanup routine and purchase format

The two crystal products here are non-clumping. That makes their bed-maintenance instructions an important part of the buying decision, especially if you are accustomed to removing urine clumps.

PrettyLitter Original Non-Clumping Unscented — 6-lb DTC bag

PrettyLitter Original is a silica-gel product sold with a color-change feature. The official Original description identifies a six-pound, unscented, non-clumping bag and describes stirring the bed and removing feces.

This makes it a useful comparison for buyers interested in that maintenance format or the marketed color-change feature. We have not established diagnostic accuracy, disease detection or veterinary-cost savings, and those are not reasons we can give for buying it.

The selected identity matters: this is the six-pound direct-to-consumer Original, rather than a different retail pack or clumping formula. We did not verify a current one-time purchase price for it. Compare the exact checkout terms and pack before making a price decision; the table deliberately leaves its cost blank.

Fresh Step Crystals Lightweight Scented — 8 lb

Fresh Step Crystals supplies a scented, non-clumping retail comparison. The selected eight-pound bag is listed by major US retailers, with a one-time purchase offer recorded in our snapshot.

Fresh Step markets the line around lightweight handling, low dust and odor control.

If fragrance is a deciding factor, note the scented designation before weighing odor-control claims. Review the selected bag’s maintenance instructions, particularly if you are switching from removing urine clumps.

These crystal options differ most in fragrance and buying format: PrettyLitter Original is the unscented six-pound DTC selection with a marketed color-change feature; Fresh Step is a scented eight-pound retail bag. Only Fresh Step has a verified one-time price in this snapshot. Both use a non-clumping cleanup approach.

Wood and pine: two different ways to clean

The wood category is especially easy to oversimplify. A clumping wood-fiber formula and a non-clumping pine pellet formula create different decisions even though both use wood.

Feline Pine Original Non-Clumping — 20 lb

Feline Pine Original is the non-clumping pine product in this comparison, with no added fragrance. The manufacturer describes natural pine and positions its absorption around ammonia odor.

Its pellet-to-sawdust behavior is central to understanding the cleanup routine. Compare those instructions with your willingness to manage the bed, rather than judging it by the urine-clump removal you expect from clay.

The selected 20-pound bag had a low recorded purchase cost per pound within this set. That makes it worth examining for purchase-budget reasons if the non-clumping routine suits you. Include sawdust management in that decision.

Catalyst Unscented Clumping Pine Wood — 10 lb

Catalyst offers the other side of the wood comparison: a clumping formula. The selected retail ingredient list names softwood, natural clumping agents and natural oil.

Catalyst markets the formula as lightweight and made from upcycled wood, with dust- and odor-reduction claims.

For additional context, Cats.com’s Unscented review section describes clumping and a faint natural wood smell; it is a reviewer’s observation rather than a test of the current ten-pound selection.

Catalyst gives buyers a clumping wood-fiber option in a smaller pack. Allow for a natural material smell even when choosing an unscented formula.

Between these wood options, the cleanup routine is the first dividing line: Feline Pine uses non-clumping pellets, while Catalyst is a clumping wood formula. The selected packs are 20 and 10 pounds respectively. Feline Pine had the lower snapshot purchase cost per pound; Catalyst offers the smaller package and clumping format.

Commercial hybrids: assess the complete formula

A commercial blend is one product with its own ingredients and instructions. Combining material names does not guarantee that every desirable property survives in the finished formula.

Sustainably Yours Large Grain Unscented — 26 lb

Sustainably Yours Large Grain combines corn and cassava. The manufacturer distinguishes its grain variants and markets the larger grains around reduced tracking, alongside clumping, odor-control and low-dust claims.

The Large Grain designation is the detail to check if particle format is central to your choice.

An independent Cats.com review discusses the Large Grains formula, but explicitly reviewed an older ten-pound pack. We use that as limited context, not validation of the current 26-pound selection.

Weigh the larger purchase and its recorded price per pound alongside that specific grain format.

pidan Signature Tofu Blend — 5.29 lb

The selected Signature Tofu Blend lists pea dregs, starch, guar gum and bentonite clay. It provides a plant/mineral contrast to Sustainably Yours’ corn/cassava combination.

The official Signature page promotes rapid absorption, clumping, reduced dust and odor control.

This entry stays with the selected 5.29-pound Signature formula. Similar names across listings, including upgraded formulas, should not be treated as interchangeable. Check the exact ingredients and pack when comparing an offer; the selected US scent designation also remains unverified.

Evaluate Signature as a finished plant/mineral product with its own instructions. Its formula is not a homemade mixing recipe.

These blends differ in material and scale: Sustainably Yours combines corn and cassava in the selected 26-pound Large Grain pack; Signature combines plant ingredients with bentonite in a 5.29-pound bag. Sustainably Yours had the lower snapshot cost per pound, while Signature required the smaller initial outlay. Compare the finished formulas rather than choosing by ingredient count.

Which litter type may suit your priorities?

Use your main buying concern to narrow the comparison. The right next step is often checking a particular formula or label, rather than choosing an entire material category.

Choose a cleanup routine, narrow the options to two or three exact products, then check the formula and purchase details.

If machine compatibility is your main concern, our guide to choosing litter for an automatic litter box covers the particle, clumping and mixing considerations in more detail.

For fragrance, begin with the verified scent field. Unscented options here include the selected Ultra, Free & Clean, Really Great Charcoal, World’s Best, PrettyLitter and Sustainably Yours formulas. The exact scent fields for the three pidan selections remain unverified in this research, so their names should not substitute for a label check.

For handling, compare the package you will actually lift. A smaller bag can simplify that part of the decision without proving greater efficiency. For several cats, keep the same product-level comparison while considering whether each cat accepts the choice and whether the supply and maintenance routine remain practical.

Put price, disposal and sustainability claims in context

A low unit price is useful information, but monthly spending also reflects how much litter you discard, replenish and replace. Without comparable use records, a price-per-pound table cannot tell you which formula will cost the least over time.

Keep purchase terms separate, too. A coupon or first-autoship offer can change the immediate checkout total without becoming the standard price of that product.

Disposal deserves its own check. Several brands market products as flushable, while the selected pidan Cassava listing says not to dispose of it in the toilet. A flushability statement does not establish permission under your local wastewater rules or suitability for your plumbing.

Likewise, corn, cassava, soy fiber, pine and upcycled wood describe materials or sourcing claims. They do not by themselves establish which finished product has the lowest environmental impact. Include disposal and actual use in that decision rather than treating “plant-based” as a complete answer.

Start by choosing the material and cleanup routine you can maintain. A preference for clump removal, non-clumping bed management or a particular material gives the comparison a practical starting point.

Then narrow the options to two or three exact products whose differences matter to you—perhaps verified fragrance, ingredients, package weight or purchase outlay. Use the within-type comparisons to decide which questions each product needs to answer, without searching for one universal winner.

Before buying, verify the current formula, scent, pack size and price against the product you intended to compare. If you use an automatic litter box, confirm its requirements too. That final check connects the research to the exact bag and setup you will actually use.
